Discord GIF size limits and requirements

Check where your GIF will be used: emoji, chat, avatars and banners have different requirements. This tool prepares emoji-sized GIFs and does not upload them to Discord.

Animated emoji
The developer limit is 256 KiB (262,144 bytes); the help center says under 256 KB. Discord recommends 128 × 128 pixels. Official guidance
Chat attachments
Currently 20 MB for free accounts, 50 MB for Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB for Nitro. Limits are being tested; follow the upload prompt on your account. Official guidance
Animated avatars
Require Nitro. The official avatar guide does not state an exact file-size cap; the emoji limit does not apply to avatars. Official guidance
Animated profile banners
Require Nitro, a file under 10 MB and dimensions of at least 680 × 240 pixels. Official guidance

128 × 128 is the recommended emoji size, not an absolute upload dimension cap for every client. Some Discord upload flows resize images automatically. Our 250,000-byte target leaves room under both KB and KiB interpretations; check the measured result. Official size recommendations

GIF compressor for Discord emoji

Discord emojis and chat attachments have different limits. This tool focuses on custom animated emojis: it first reduces the image to at most 128 pixels on either side, then searches for a smaller file while preserving the animation timeline and loop setting.

Why the tool targets 250 KB

Discord’s developer documentation caps emoji at 256 KiB, or 262,144 bytes, while its help article says under 256 KB. We choose 250,000 bytes to stay below both. This is our working target, not a separate Discord requirement. The measured output determines whether the target was reached.

Keep the whole image or crop an emoji

The whole-image option preserves the aspect ratio without stretching or cutting anything off. The crop option starts with a square selection that you can move or adjust. Smaller images are not enlarged. Check faces, text and transparent edges at the final emoji size.

Long GIFs may need a shorter clip

A long or detailed GIF may still exceed the target after resizing. Color reduction and frame thinning can affect quality. Use GIF Cutter to select the useful moment, then return here to compress it. Downloading a GIF below the size target does not grant Discord permissions or Nitro features.

Discord GIF compressor FAQ

Upload a GIF, keep the whole image or choose a crop, and press Compress for Discord. The tool fits the selected area within 128 × 128 pixels and searches for a result at or below 250,000 bytes. Preview and download it, then add it in your server’s Emoji settings.

The developer API specifies 256 KiB, which is 262,144 bytes. The help center describes the limit as under 256 KB. Our 250,000-byte target is below both interpretations. Check the actual result size: a completed compression is not necessarily a successful size target.

Discord recommends 128 × 128 for emoji, and its blog says larger or smaller images can work through the upload editor. We fit the GIF within that size without stretching or enlarging it. To make a square emoji, choose Crop a region and adjust the square selection.

This page prepares small custom emojis. Chat attachments have a separate, larger upload limit; use the regular GIF Compressor for a custom file-size target. Animated profile avatars require Nitro. Shrinking a GIF does not remove membership requirements, server permissions or other Discord restrictions.

Animated inputs remain GIFs, with the original playback duration and loop setting preserved. Cropping and resizing can change the image, and compression may reduce colors or frames. Transparent inputs retain transparency through processing. Use the before-and-after preview to check the actual motion and edges.

The tool reports that the target was not reached and offers the smallest result it found. It does not pad files or label an oversized result as ready for upload. Try a shorter clip in GIF Cutter or a smaller crop, then inspect the new result before downloading.

The tool is free and requires no account. GIFs are uploaded to our server for processing and become unavailable one hour after upload. The upload area shows the current file-size limit. Download your result before it expires; uploading it to Discord is a separate step you control.
